What is a Fellow?

A. A. Emami, D.O., M.D., F.H.U., F.A.C.O.I. is a Fellow of the Hospitalist's Union. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Internists (F.A.C.O.I.). According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, a fellow is "A member of a learned society." The distinction of being named a Fellow achieved by meeting the requirements outlined in the bylaws of the Hospitalist's Union and the American College of Osteopathic Internists (A.C.O.I.). These bylaws dictate that the American College of Osteopathic Internists' (A.C.O.I.) Board of Directors may award the title of "Fellow" to one who meets the following requirements:

  1. Certification by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine of the American Board of Internal Medicine;
  2. Active A.C.O.I., Inc., membership in good standing for the two-year period preceding nomination;
  3. Possession of active medical license in good standing;
  4. Demonstration of continuing professional accomplishments and scholarship;
  5. Documentation of continuing professional activities, which may include teaching, membership and services to regional and national professional organizations, hospital committee work, research, participation as both teacher and student in continuing medical education activities, significant achievement in the practice of Osteopathic medicine and service to the public and community.

In 2021 (or sooner), A. A. Emami, D.O., M.D., F.H.U., F.A.C.O.I. will likely choose not to maintain his Fellowship with the American College of Osteopathic Internists (A.C.O.I.) to save money for his patients. Currently the cost of Fellowship with the American College of Osteopathic Internists (A.C.O.I.) is $1,133 per year ($683 per year for American Osteopathic Association (A.O.A.) dues + $450 per year for American College of Osteopathic Internists' dues (A.C.O.I.). The aforementioned cost of $1,133 does not factor in other associated costs. A. A. Emami, D.O., M.D., F.H.U., F.A.C.O.I. will, however, maintain his Fellowship with the Hospitalist's Union.
